24-year-old musician Steve Lacy dropped his third album, 'Gemini Rights,' this past July. Steve Lacy has been a respected and well-known musician since he was in high school. Before working as a solo artist, Lacy was a part of a band called The Internet. In 2013, Lacy co-produced The Internet’s third album, 'Ego Death,' which was nominated for a Grammy award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. In 2017, Lacy dropped one of his most well known songs, “Dark Red,” which blew up in the indie rock and R&B world and received over 500 million streams.
Since then, Lacy has made 3 albums and has appeared on numerous tracks from other artists including Tyler the Creator and Kali Uchis. 'Gemini Rights' is a blend of experimental music and retro-psychedelia. Lacy delivers crisp vocals to every track and brings along a couple featured artists, such as Foushee on “Sunshine” and Matt Martians on “2Gether (Enterlude).” Lacy offers a flawless falsetto voice on songs such as “Static” and “Amber.” You hear more themes of mainstream music in his songs “Bad Habit” and “Sunshine,” both of which became extremely popular across social and digital media platforms after its release.
Instrument wise, Lacy is mainly known as a guitarist. In songs like “Amber” and “Buttons” Lacy provides the listener with heated guitar licks and solos. My favorite off of the album would have to be the closeout track, “Give You The World.” It offers a very laid-back and romantic vibe along with the smoothness and preciseness of Lacy’s vocals. I personally loved the album and thought it provided a very flamboyant musical palette.
