Moon Knight, the Marvel television series that debuted in March of 2022, included a soundtrack that caught the attention of fans worldwide. As the series is heavily focused on Egyptian history, director Mohammed Diab embedded multiple Egyptian tracks throughout the show. Specifically, what caught peoples’ attention was the Egyptian rap song, “El Melouk.” Played during the end credits of the second episode, some viewers were unexpectedly impressed by this unfamiliar tune.
“El Melouk '' is of the Mahraganat genre: a type of Egyptian street music that is sometimes banned in Egypt. The genre was created in the early 2000s, blending together rap, folk, techno, and R&B styles. For Middle Eastern fans to hear this genre in a well-known western entertainment franchise was shocking.
Known for having somewhat generic soundtracks in their works, Marvel pushed down a new path for the music of Moon Knight. Mohammed Diab created a successful strategy behind his show’s soundtrack to expose people to catchy music and to represent Egyptian music on an international stage.
